Mobile Marketing and Small Business: An Overlooked Marketing Plan Finally on the Rise

Today, it would be grossly negligent to try to run any business without computers, internet access and a web presence. More recently, social media seemed like a strange experiment and many businesses hesitated to join Facebook, Twitter and other outlets. The businesses who hopped on board and built friend lists, gained Facebook “likes” and developed a following benefitted greatly while the naysayers simply colored themselves irrelevant.

So, what is the next big marketing innovation for small business owners? Many experts see targeted mobile marketing as the newest frontier. If this is true, what strategies can be used to succeed in the new world of mobile web based marketing? And, what are benefits of being one of the renegade few companies who jump in first?

Mobile phones have become as near and dear to most individuals as their wallets and handbags. The International Telecommunication Union reports that over 5 billion people are subscribed to cell phone plans worldwide and in the United States, 9 out of every 10 people uses a mobile phone. Mobile phones, unlike television sets, radios and computers are almost always within arm’s length.

Marketing to potential customers via their mobile phone begins to make alot of sense when research studies report that at least 10% of all online searches, one of the most popular ways people seek information about products and services, are performed on mobile phones. Over 95% of new phones are equipped with mobile web browsers and, in the United States, 70 million or more consumers use their mobile device to browse the web regularly.

The mobile web is already currently used by 120 million people and experts predict that, in the next three years, all purchasing decisions made by United States consumers will be influenced in some way by the mobile internet. This will be an interesting trend to watch because, in general, mobile web users have a different customer profile than traditional web users and catering to them requires non-traditional thinking. Rather than a fancy website with rich graphics and complicated animation features, mobile web users prefer to see a basic template with the simple facts about a product or service.

Instant gratification features, such as a button that makes restaurant reservations in real time or immediate mapping from the mobile device to your location, appeal to the mobile web user demographic. Google Maps and the review site Yelp are popular mobile web applications and most experts say that having a social media presence is also seen as very favorable among mobile web users.

A very exciting trend, custom mobile apps, gives individuals and businesses the opportunity to create their own program for download. By designing a custom app, you will impress your potential customers, promote your brand and possibly even make an additional income from download sales.

Mobile marketing, which generally utilizes text messaging to send product or promotional information to potential customers, can target a specific customer base via the mobile web. Text messaging is one of the hottest trends in communication worldwide.

With over one trillion text messages sent through cell phone plans in 2008, and that number growing daily, it can be assumed that most consumers are comfortable and web savvy enough to respond favorable to text message marketing. In fact, research from Mobile Marketing Watch suggests that 70% of consumers respond to text message marketing while only 30% respond to email marketing.

Considering how important mobile web usage is predicted to become in the next few years, and the influence it is expected to have on shoppers, one might assume that small businesses were jumping in the gap between old online shopping and new mobile web commerce. But, they are not. In fact, according to some surveys, less than 7% of small businesses have optimized their website for mobile web users and more than 60% view mobile marketing as a newfangled idea that is too cutting edge to actually be successful.

We are at a unique forefront in the world of commerce and technology. The small businesses and companies who jump in wholeheartedly and embrace the new world of mobile web browsing by catering to the needs of this growing customer base will likely reap huge rewards. By utlizing the focused power of text message marketing, taking simple steps to optimize their websites for mobile browsers, installing mobile commerce features and mobile apps that make information gathering easy for consumers and utilizing social media features like Facebook’s “Likes” and “check-ins”, these cutting edge businesses will dare to succeed in the new age of technology driven commerce.

Summing Up What I Actually Do

A lot of people ask me what it is I exactly do…  most people’s eyes glaze over when I tell them I’m an internet marketer. I even had one guy ask me if that meant I sell porn! So obviously, there’s a lot out misinformation out there.

But then I started thinking about the term internet marketer anyway. What does that mean? If I wrote ads and specialized in the radio would I tell people I’m a radio marketer? Or how about a TV marketer? No and no. The reality is I’m a marketer who has chosen to specialize in the online medium.

Although, rather quickly I’m also expanding into the area of mobile marketing as well. This includes area like mobile websites, SMS text marketing, QR Code Generator, and more. But I’ll save that for another post.

Tonight when I was walking my dog (a time I really love to just think) it finally hit me. The perfect way to explain to people exactly what I do. That way, I’ll never be thwarted again at another party. So, what is it I do?

Here’s the exact sentence, and if you do what I do, you might want to memorize it:

I help small business owners market their products and services online.

And there you have it! A perfect explanation that can apply to just about anything we do. Whether we are helping to sell information products, helping local businesses get new leads, or setting up a free facebook fanpage for a client.

So, that’s what I do. And I love it. It’s part of what makes me who I am. And I’m also proud to say I’m pretty good at it. I’ve either personally or with partners setup multiple businesses ranging from real brick and mortar offline businesses to online “money making systems” and tons of niches from dog skin care to how to write a book, to satellite tv reviews!

It’s been a fun ride thus far and I look forward to what the future holds.

Market Research: Give Your Customers What They Want

When it comes to successful marketing, the biggest problem I see beginners making is focusing on WHAT they are going to sell. Sadly, this is generally a recipe for failure. And the bad part is, this is what makes the most sense. As the quote goes, “build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door.”

In some instances, this may be true. Some of the greatest inventions of our time were new ideas. From the combustible engine to the IPAD, there weren’t people asking for these things. If you asked someone what they wanted before the invention of the automobile, they wouldn’t say a “moving vehicle”… they’d want a faster horse because that’s all they knew.

So, there is a time and place for stretching your customer and changing the paradigm of their thinking. But, in general, you need to focus not on what your customer NEEDS… but instead on what they want.

Here’s the truth about marketing/psychology/life in general:

People don’t go after what they NEED… they go after what they WANT.

Sure, we buy things we need. Like toilet paper, tooth paste, and mouth wash. (At least I hope we all buy those things! ;) But, most of these type products are bought based on price… not status. These types of businesses are “commodity based” models where ultimately competitors get into a bidding war and drive the profits margins down to 2 or 3%.

So, unless you want to sell basic “need” items for peanut profit margins – what else can you do?

The answer is easy…

Sell people what they WANT!

This is a terrible example, but unfortunately I’m going to use it. Have you ever had the displeasure of living with someone or knowing someone who was addicted to hardcore drugs? They would rather buy drugs than take care of their family, they’d steal from you just to get their next fix.

Reason is thrown out the window – they are focused only on one thing – what they want.

Now, I’m not saying you should go and sell drugs by any means!! ;)

What I’m saying is this.

Instead of starting with WHAT you are going to sell… instead focus on WHO you are going to sell to. This makes life a whole lot easier. Take a look at what is already working, at what people are already buying. Then – sell that.

I know it’s not sexy or glamorous and it can be more exciting to dream up the next IPAD… but trust me, it’s pretty exciting when you see sales popping everyday in your bank account.

So, that’s where you need to start at. Decide what people want by doing proper Market Research. Use the Google Keyword Tool (google that term to find it) and you can see if people are already searching for your idea. And if they are, BAM – you’re onto something.

3 Free Ways To Market Your Small Business Online

Note: While this post is aimed at local small business owners, internet marketers will also get a lot out of it. Please read and share the love. :)

Most small business owners know they need to be involved in online marketing but many are at a loss on simple steps they can take to get started or grow their internet presence.  It’s unfair too because many small businesses are stuck buying expensive print ads in newspapers and the yellow pages.

So, in this short article, we’re going to learn 3 free ways to market your small business on the internet. With no further ado, let’s do it!

Create a Facebook Fan Page

Facebook Fan Pages are not just a novelty anymore. If you look, most “big brands” aren’t even advertising their own websites these days, they’re advertising their facebook page. You’ve probably seen ads for companies like Ford and at the end it says “visit us on facebook” or something along those lines.

Why is facebook so important for small business marketing? To answer that question, let me tell you a story. Imagine you go to a party and when you arrive first. While you’re waiting for everyone else to show up you look around the room. Sure, there are beautiful pictures everywhere and you can read all about your host and even learn a little about why the party is happening.

After hours and hours of waiting alone, you finally figure it out. No one else is coming to this party. So, why am I talking about parties? Because that “party” is your website (if you have one). Websites are good to quickly give information, but there’s no space for interaction. And even if there is, it’s not in real time.

Facebook practically allows you to communicate in real time with your customers, and it allows them to interact with each other. Your best customers will help spread the word about your business and help the “newbies” who have questions. To go back to our party example, it’s like being at a party with all the cool kids – and they all want to talk to you!

So, if you don’t have a facebook fanpage yet… now is the time.

And I have some good news for you, I’ve setup a site where my team and I will GIVE your business a FREE Facebook Fan Page For Small Business. You can claim your free page here: http://FreeFanPage.biz

Please note: Many people charge up to $497 for this service, so if you don’t have a page yet, don’t pay for it… use the software I have and get it done right away. You’ll be amazed how easy it is and you get complete instructions and videos and even my support line.

Blogging For Your Business

Besides a facebook fan page, you need to be blogging. A Blog is simply a type of website that allows you to post articles or posts in order. They aren’t too hard to setup and you can get free blogs from sites like blogger.com or wordpress.com. Although, I think it’s best to install your own custom blog software.

Blogs are really important because they allow you to create fresh content which in turn get your site ranked for better terms. This is especially important for local businesses because it’s a lot easier to rank for keywords when you have a local phrase. For example, if I wanted to rank for Tarpon Springs Internet Marketer it wouldn’t be that hard because:

1) There’s not a lot of competition

2) I have a blog and can write a blog post all about that topic

Google loves stuff like this because the page that my blog creates is completely optimized for the phrase Tarpon Springs Internet Marketer. And blogs also help solve the “party scene with no guests” scenario because you can actually include facebook comments in your blog. This is a bit complex, but most web designers can do this for you if you ask.

Find Free Small Business Leads Using Twitter

This is a great little tactic for small businesses, especially if you don’t mind reaching out and looking for customers. So many local business owners just wait for someone to walk in the door… so by getting out and looking you’ll be 10 times better off than other business owners.

Here’s how this strategy works. Many people are on twitter. It’s a micr0-blogging site that allows people to post short updates about what they’re doing. You can sign up for Twitter by going to Twitter.com. It’s always best to use your name so you appear to be more real. And don’t worry, it’s free to sign up.

Anyway, when you register you can now communicate with other people on Twitter. So, who are you going to talk to on there? Easy. You’re going to go here:

http://search.twitter.com/advanced

Search for words or phrases people might say who need your product or service. The good thing about Twitter is that people love to complain on there over mundane things. For example, someone might write, “dang it! My brakes are going out. This sucks!”

So, imagine if you’re an automechanic you could contact that person and offer them a free check-up or whatever. And the best part is, before you do your search, you can actually type in a zip code area to search in. That way, if you’re in Dunedin, Florida you are going to be seeing updates from people in a different state.

Small Business Internet Marketing: Start Now

You’ve just been given 3 great ways to get stated marketing your small business online. But the real key is to get started now. Don’t wait another second. Your competitors are either already online taking your customers or getting ready to be. One of the real keys to the internet is that the early bird gets the worm.

So, take what you’ve just read and put it to work now.

Small Business Internet Marketing In Tarpon Springs & Palm Harbor Florida

If you’re a small business in Tarpon Springs, Florida or Palm Harbor, FL, then this article is meant for you. The internet is currently a wide open field of new customers just trying to find your business. And the best part is that getting on the internet and getting found can be relatively easy, if you take the right steps.

I want to give you 3 easy internet marketing tips you can take to the bank right now. If you’re not doing any small business internet marketing, then you are missing out on a lot more customers coming in your store or calling you every single day.

Here are some quick marketing tips you can use right away.

Small Business Marketing Tip 1

Make sure you have a website! I know most businesses do now, but believe it or not, there are still local businesses in Tarpon Springs and Palm Harbor that don’t have a website! It’s crazy, but it’s true. 70% of people go online to look up a business BEFORE they call or drop by.

But just because you have a website, don’t think you’re off the hook here. You’re not. Having a website is not the goal here. You don’t just want a website, you want a website that works for you. And this is important.

I work as a small business internet marketing consultant and I have since 2006 full time. And what I always see business owners doing is paying a LOT of money for web design services and websites that just don’t work. Sure, it may look “pretty”, but there’s a few things every website needs.

We’ll talk more about that now.

Small Business Internet Marketing Tip 2

Make sure your website is optimized so the search engines can find you. I know if you aren’t tech savvy this can sound a little bit scary. That’s ok. There are really only 2-3 things you need to tell your web guy to focus on here. If you can hit these things, you are doing better than about 90% of everyone else out there. (I told you things are EASY right now when it comes to local internet marketing).

  1. Make sure your business name, business type, and city are found in the following places:
    - In your title tag
    - In your Meta description tag
    - In your meta keyword tag
    - And in an H1 or H2 tag in the content of your website
  2. Make sure you’ve signed up for Google Places and that your business is listed
  3. Make sure you have added your website and business address to as many websites/online directories as you possibly can.

A little more on these topics. The onsite search engine optimization stuff is pretty easy if you have a web guy. If you don’t, it can be tough. You do have to know about web site design and sometimes even a little programming. But, it’s worth it. Imagine how many more customers can find you.

Google Places is a no-brainer. If you aren’t on here, you are missing out. This is hugely important.

And to add your website and business address to other websites just do a Google search for “business type” directory. So, if you’re an attorney type in Attorney directory. You can usually find a link to add your website and information. This becomes even more powerful if you use local websites.

For example, Palm Harbor small business directory or Tarpon Springs small business directory. If you add your website to local directories, the search engines like that a lot and send you more customers.

And finally…

Small Business Web Marketing Tip 3

Start building an email list of your customers and prospects. Your website should have a form on it that collects the name, email, and sometimes phone number of your visitors. If you’re not doing this, you are literally losing out on TONS of money.

As a small business internet marketing consultant I can truly say this is the biggest mistake I see local businesses making. You are wasting about 99% of your effort if you aren’t building a list.

This is easily fixable and I recommend you get on this right now. My recommendation is to use a company called Aweber. Aweber lets you build a database of your customers and allows you to email them whenever you want. And you can get started for an entire month for just $1.00.

Not bad.

After that month, it’s only $19 a month and you can email up to 500 customers as much as you want. You can send them coupons, special offers, free content, anything you want.

Small business email marketing is EXACTLY what you need to turn your business into a highly profitable machine.
