5 Different Ways to Promote Your Business Online

So you finally got a website for your business? Great. Is your website appealing and actually have useful information? Even better. Now comes the confusing, arduous process of promoting your business and the website which represents your business. There are a good number of ways to promote your business online, and I recommend trying as many as you can.

Online Classifieds

One of the best ways to promote your business (and you can do this without even having a website up) is to registry your business into the endless amounts of online classifieds websites out there. Registration is usually a quick and easy process that would take no more than ten minutes per website. Since there are so many online classifieds out there, it’s a good idea to get into the heads of your clientele and think about which websites they would likely use. It’s also not a bad idea to ask your customers which local listings sites they use through a survey that might accompany a purchase. Some good online classifieds pages to include are the following:

E-Newsletter

If you don’t already have an online newsletter arriving in your clientele’s inboxes, you should start now. If you need email addresses, this would be a great prompt to include in a customer survey. How often should you send out the newsletter? Unless you update or make additions to your business monthly, I would just send them out quarterly or case-by-case. If you are moving locations or changing inventories, obviously let your customers know. If nothing much is happening, don’t annoy your customers with pointless emails.

Social Media

This is actually somewhat of a tough call, as I don’t believe it is necessary for all businesses. Not every business needs a Twitter or Facebook account; in fact some customers might be confused or even laugh at the idea for some businesses. Then again, places like restaurants or bars with a changing menu or varied specials would have good use for a social media account. I would advise you to survey if your clientele are active social media users and which social media they use. Giving your customers any easier way to contact or access you is never a bad thing.

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) should have a post all to itself. Essentially it is the process of optimizing your website with the best keywords possible that would bring in search engine traffic. To do this, you have to spend a good amount of time brainstorming keywords that potential customers would type into Google to find your company or service. It’s also a good idea to look at your competition’s websites and see what keywords they have for their sites. Often times, you will find that many business’s websites have language that is too highly specialized and probably doesn’t bring in much search engine traffic. Once you think you have a good set of keywords that people would search to find a business such as yours, implement them into your website every way you can: Page titles, navigation menus, picture captions, paragraph text, and so forth.

Advertisements

This could also be its own blog post. There are an infinite amount of spaces on the internet where you could advertise. The key is finding the places that would give you the most success. Personally, I don’t think Google AdWords is the way to go for most businesses; too many people pass them up, and your SEO should give you results on Google anyway. Instead, I think specialized blogs related to your business are a decent avenue. Particularly if the blogs are localized, it would probably have an even more direct effect on your customer base.

3 Of My Favorite Free WordPress Plugins

I’ve been in this blogging game for a while now. I setup my first blog way back on July 4th, 2006. That’s almost 6 years ago now. Wow. Feels weird typing that. Anyway, that’s an eternity in internet years. The way I figure it, one year on the internet is like 10 years in the offline world. So that gives me about 60 years experience as a blogger.

One of the many things I’ve learned over the years are great wordpress plugins. I don’t really like paying for plugins, so in this post I’ll focus only on my favorite FREE wordpress plugins.

Enough banter, let’s knock this post out in less than 500 words, shall we?

1) All In One SEO Pack

This is a must have plugin. It’s usually the first plugin I add to any theme. This little guy let’s you setup your blog the right way. The way search engines love. You can set your title, your description, your keywords, and easily edit each post or page you make with the SEO you need.

Without this plugin, your blog will have about 25% of it’s full power. You need it. Read about it for more detail.

2) Sociable

We know the whole world has gone social, but has your blog? This handy plugin lets you add links to let your reader share your (hopefully) awesome content on twitter, facebook, and a gazillion other social networks.

This plugin is super easy to configure. Pretty much you just upload it and activate it… that’s it. From that point on, you’ll start seeing traffic coming in from social sites as the viral nature of the internet takes over.

3) Outbrain

This killer plugin is all about stickiness. In that in keeps people on your blog longer. And that is a very good thing. Outbrain offers related posts from your blog (and other blogs) at the end of your content. But here’s the cool part.

It will also put links to your content on other people’s sites. In essence, it’s a blog content link network. And it happens automatically. You just upload and look at the bottom of your blog.

The plugin scours your site for related content and offers it to your reader. The reader then reads more from you and has a much greater chance of joining your list or buying something from you or clicking an ad or doing whatever you want them to do ultimately.

So there you have it. 3 of favorite free wordpress plugins. Your blog will go a lot farther with just these 3 little guys. Of course there’s thousands of great wordpress plugins, but these 3 will put you on the right path.

And we finished with only 444 words.

My Blog Stats 3 Months After Starting This Site

I started this blog back on May 9th, 2010. Since starting it I’ve had 3045 unique visitors. I’ve made thousands of dollars off the blog. . My blog is officially 3 months old today, so I thought it would be a good chance to take a look at my blog and see what things I should keep doing and what things I should change.

I’ve been focusing on sending SOME traffic to this site, but I should say that I have a TON more traffic tricks up my sleeve but I haven’t been using them. This blog has been a sort of test into using only free traffic tactics to see what I can do without spending a dime or a lot of time. Here’s what I’ve done so far in marketing this site.

1) EzineArticles.com

I installed a plugin from Ezinearticles that let’s me submit each blog as an article directly to ezinearticles right from my blog interface. It makes it super easy and you don’t have to deal with going to EzineArticles and doing all that.

On a scale from 1-10, I would give this a rating of 7.

In total, I’ve submitted 13 Articles to EzineArticles.com. This has resulted in 822 page views thus far. My best performing article is one I knew would perform well. It’s called how to make money fast. That article alone accounted for 446 of the 822 views. This is because in the “make money online” internet marketing niche the target market is really out for 3 things:

1) How can I make money online?

2) How can I do it super fast?

3) How can I do it without that much work?

By knowing my target market, I wrote an article I knew would appeal to them. If this blog were my main income source (it’s not), I would write more about this topic because it’s now proven itself.

When it comes to actual results from these ezinearticles page views becoming visits to my site, here’s how it looks:

882 page views – 62 clicks. That’s an overall clickthrough rate of 7%. Not great. I would love for that to be more. This means I need to look back through my article bylines and see which ones are performing the best and use those.

As a result of my article being on EzineArticles my articles have been used in ezine publications 18 times. That’s more traffic, more backlinks, and more exposure. Overall, this has probably been my best traffic source.

2) Forum Marketing

I have been posting regularly in the Warrior Forum. It’s a place where a lot of internet marketers hang out. I’ve had decent results from it. I don’t have exact stats on it, but from what I’ve been watching I’ve probably had about 150 unique visitors from there. It’s not that bad, because I post on there anyway so it’s truly easy.

Also, these people are way more likely to buy my products because they are always in search of new marketing ideas, traffic strategies, or tools to help them in their business. I rank this a 6/10 stars because of the low amount of traffic. But if I posted more on there, I’d get more traffic.

One strategy I do there is to make sure I’m talking in the threads that get a lot of play. I still post in threads that are small, but it doesn’t hurt to stop in a thread that is getting thousands of views.

3) Videos on Youtube.com

Here’s one that I pretty much quit on. I was taking my articles, reading them, and adding the audio to a quick presentation slide. I didn’t track all the clicks from this effort, but I made a total of 221 views off 4 videos.

Looking at it again, this is probably something I should have kept up with. It just didn’t “feel” like it was worth it at the time. I may go back now and add some more videos and keep a close eye on my tracking to see how many visits I get to my blog off it.

My rating here is 5/10 because of the time to make the videos.

4) Facebook Fan Page

Social networking is of course all the rage and I like it. But I’m still not 100% sold on the results of it. I’ve been skeptical of sites like twitter and facebook for direct response style marketing for a while now. I actually taught Twitter at a marketing conference way back in 2007. I may have been one of the first to do that. :)

But, what I do see the value in, is having a decent amount of fans or followers. Since creating my facebook fan page, I’ve got a total of 121 fans. I haven’t run any ads or anything like that. It’s just been word of mouth and me inviting my facebook friends. When I hit 200 fans, I may turn on some ads and see what happens from there.

Whenever I update my fan page, I can count on 2-3 visitors to show up here to read my latest blog post. Again, these numbers will grow when I expand the number of fans. Apart from traffic, I don’t see a lot more benefit to this besides branding myself. That’s what I use it for. It looks good when people check in on me and see that I have 121 fans.

It’s sort of social proof these days. It’s worth having, even IF there aren’t a ton of sales backing it up. It’s good to have friends either way.

My rating on this is 5/10.

5) Twitter Marketing

I don’t go on Twitter. I set it up to automatically update whenever I update my facebook page. Not my fan page, but my personal facebook. Everytime I update my personal facebook page, I get a follower of two on Twitter.

My experience from Twitter so far has been more of a marketer meet marketer experience. So many marketers are on there trying to “get rich with twitter” that they are sort of feeding on themselves. Most everyone who adds me on twitter has tens of thousands of people they are following and they are just trying to grow their twitter follower list.

I’m sure I could do a lot more with Twitter, but it just hasn’t been my thing.

Rating: 4/10

Funny, as I wrote this, an email just came in with someone who just followed me. Here’s their stats:

4715 followers
1400 tweets
following 4455 people

You can see that no “real” person should be following 4,445 people.

6) Social Bookmarking

This is one that I’ve been a little disappointed in. I expected a lot more traffic from this avenue. I actually bought a program called Bookmarking Demon which costs a decent amount. I think around $97 or so.

It works great, but the issue I’ve seen is not getting much traffic from it. The good news is that it’s giving me a lot of backlinks. After 3 months, I have 243 backlinks pointing to my domain. That’s a decent amount. However, it’s not been enough for me to rank yet for much in the search engines.

I usually stumble my best posts and that results in an immediate surge of about 3-5 visitors. Again, not much, but it can all add up. Right now, my social bookmarking efforts have seemed very manual and very slow. I thought that some of my content would have produced a little better response from people.

The reality is that content is king, but when you have a new blog, sometimes it’s hard to get that content in front of the right people. I’m going to step up my bookmarking efforts though and really make sure I go after some keywords for SEO purposes. I think longterm, my efforts will pay off. At the 6 month point, I expect google to finally trust my site and show me some love.

rating: 3/10 for traffic, 10/10 for backlinks

7) Blog Commenting

Almost forgot this one. This one has actually done well for me. It creates traffic and backlinks at the same time. Whenever I leave a comment on someone else’s blog I can almost always count on 5 visitors from that site. It’s like clockwork. If there was one method I would tell people to focus on, that would be it.

I really think you could see great results over time.

One trick I do is instead of putting my name in the name field, I put my keyword. Some bloggers hate this, so look around and see what’s been approved previously before you do this.

rating: 8/10

Conclusion so far:

So far I’ve been averaging 1,000 unique visitors per month. I’ve added 91 people to my email list directly from this blog. That’s about 1 person a day on average. It’s right on par with the 10% optin rate I’ve seen most blogs get.

I have seen a rise lately though because I added a hover ad that displays an offer to opt-in. With Aweber.com, this is something you can do really easily.

With the stats I have now, I am planning on rolling out some paid ads in the coming weeks. Including some banners that point to certain areas of my blog. I’m also (finally) creating a new squeeze page and a new system.

That has been the ultimate point of this experiment. What kind of results can I get without spending a lot of time (and no money) on a blog where I write down ideas and thoughts about internet marketing. Well, now I know.

I also put my blog right up there with the whole “branding” idea. Having a blog helps my brand. It shows that I’m an expert. When I do consulting with other businesses, it helps them to see some of what I’m doing and thinking. And you can’t put a price tag on that. And, as I already said, soon enough I’ll fall into the good graces of google and the traffic floodgates will open wide.

If you’re up to it, share some of your traffic experiments and results.

3 Easy Ways To Create Backlinks And Get Free Traffic To Your Blog

When it comes to creating backlinks, most of us know it’s important. But what most of us don’t know are easy ways to do it. I have to confess, when I was getting started online I always knew I needed backlinks. But, getting them seemed like something only SEO gurus knew how to do.

Well, flash forward a few years later and I’ve cracked the code on some of the easiest and fastest ways to create backlinks and get traffic to your blog or website.

And that’s an important point. While you’re building your backlinks, it’s definitely nice to get traffic as well. Beats waiting around for google to find you and rank you decently for a well searched keyword phrase or term.

So, here are the 3 easy ways to get backlinks to your site and drive free traffic.

1) Leave Blog Comments On Other People’s Blogs

This is one of the easiest strategies you can do. I once had a person doing this full time for one of my sites and I became a PR4 site quickly and got hundreds of unique visitors everyday.

But, if you’re going to do this, let me let you in on a little secret. Make sure you target “DOFOLLOW” links. Let me explain.

Many sites are coded so that all links that point out have a tag that tells the search engines not to give credit to that link as a “true’ backlink. Basically, it says “yeah we linked to them but they didn’t earn it”.

The search engine doesn’t give you as much credit for these type of links. So the answer is to look for “DOFOLLOW” blogs that allow comments.

And how do you find these? Simple. A website already exists that you can use right now to find these blogs. The site is called DoFollow Diver. DoFollow Diver allows you to search for blogs that will count as a backlink for you. This is great. And it’s free. So you really can’t beat it. A good method is to find 5 websites each day and leave comments.

It shouldn’t take you more than 20 minutes. And the more you do it, the better you’ll get at it. You can also outsource this to someone else. Like, maybe even a neighborhood kid or your own kid. :)

So, to create backlinks and get traffic. Just look for topics related to your site or blog and leave a comment. Make sure it’s a good comment. If you want to get a little sneaky, instead of leaving your name, you could put your keyword phrase in the name field.

And viola, you have created a backlink pointing your website. Now, keep doing it!

Here’s the link to the website you can use to find related blogs that are dofollow:

2) Tap Into Traffic From Youtube With Your Own Link On Someone Else’s Video

This is something I’ve just heard about and I’m definitely going to take part in it. All you do is look for current youtube videos that are getting a lot of views.

Usually this will be on movie trailers, songs with lyrics attached, etc. You can also search for videos that have to do with your website or blog.

You’re looking for a few key things:

a) No link in the description

b) At least 50,000 views so far

c) The traffic is on an upward growth

d) How relative is the video to your website*

This can all be seen instantly when you find the youtube video. Once you’ve found a video, simply contact the person who put the video online.

Let them know you’d like to pay them money to put a link in their description. Some won’t go for it, but many will. And before you think you have to spend a ton of money, think again.

The examples I’ve seen so far, people have been paying about $20 to get a link. This is a good backlink and as the traffic increases, you should see a steady growth of visitors.

*This type of traffic is best suited for broad offers like “make money”, “weight loss”, etc.

3) Ezine Marketing – Having People With A List Promote Your Website (and you!)

Did you know there are tens of thousands of ezines about all sorts of topics. Many are about your niche or website or blog. If you’re unfamiliar with an ezine, it’s just an online newsletter about a certain niche or topic. The equivalent of an online magazine.

All you have to do is find them and offer to provide free content to them, like an article or a video teaching something you know.

Many times, the people who run these ezines are starving for content and will gladly accept your article. What they get out of this is content for their list, and what you get is your website put in front of potentially thousands of people.

And here’s the really cool part. Many ezine owners maintain a blog or website that houses prior issues. If they don’t have this, suggest it to them. It will get them more traffic and grow their list.

So, if they accept your material, they will of course send it out to their list. But, if they also add your content to their website guess what you get?

An instant backlink.

And that’s powerful. There’s more than one ezine out there that you can work with too. Heck, you could probably even use the same content a few different times with different lists.

See the potential? You’ll get traffic from the ezine when the newsletter goes out. You’ll get traffic from the ezine owners website, and you’ll get a backlink from their website that will help in your long term SEO plan.

So, there are 3 quick and easy ways to get traffic and backlinks. The key is to find out what you’re best at and focus on that. Don’t get scattered in too many areas. If you did these 3 things everyday, you’d be doing awesome.

So, get out there and get some traffic and backlinks…

3 Easy Steps To Online Marketing Success

I took a week off of my business and traveled to lovely Los Angeles, California. I can’t divulge why I was there, but it was freaking awesome. While I was there, I turned on my computer exactly 1 time. I was gonna write a blog post, but then I never got around to it.

So, when I got home (gone for 7 days, remember) I checked my stats and was AMAZED to see that even though I did no work at all, I still managed to bring in $470.95. Not a life changing sum of money, but for me it really validated something.

This time last year I was working ALL the time. I literally would spend ALL my time working on my internet business. I had a bunch of partners and wasn’t living life on my terms. Now, when my old businesses ended, I had to start over. And that’s what I’ve been doing. Starting over.

And it’s a slower process than I like. Not because what I’m doing is hard, but because I’m making sure I setup THIS business the way I want it. And that’s an important lesson.

I could easily turn back on the same “system” I used to run. And it would work wonders. But right now, I’m a lot more interested in the quality of my life (especially health). So, I am focusing on building a long term business with lots of happy customers. I’m focusing on getting back into really good shape and changing my life.

I’m venturing into other niches outside of internet marketing. It’s really been an awesome year for me.

And I want to encourage you if you’re reading this right now to keep pushing on for your dreams. You can accomplish anything you want. If you want to have your own internet business, let me give you these 3 tips. If you do these three things, you stand a pretty good chance or finding success.

1) Choose A Market With A Lot Of BUYERS

2) Build An Email List Of Those People

3) Email Them With Content and Offers Weekly (Say Hi and Buy!)

That’s it. That’s the real secret. Doesn’t sound very exciting does it? But it works. I’ve been passively bringing in thousands of dollars per month since I relaunched my online presence earlier this year. I’ve committed no money to paid ads and built everything through SEO, forums, videos, social bookmarking, and article marketing.

It’s all about consistency.

I know this post is a little bit rambly, but I had all these ideas in my head and just wanted to get them down. Maybe it will help you. If you are having success with your online business or have questions, leave a comment below.
